What is Chikankari

Chikankari is a white-thread (and now coloured-thread) hand embroidery from Lucknow. The pattern is block-printed onto the fabric, embroidered by hand in stitches such as bakhiya (shadow work), phanda, murri and jaali, and the print is then washed out. Because every piece is stitched by hand, small variations between items are expected and are part of the craft.

Which fabric to choose

Cotton and mul — breathable, for daily and summer wear.
Chanderi — a light sheen, for festive daytime wear.
Georgette — flowing, for parties and functions.

Caring for Chikankari

Hand wash cotton pieces gently in cold water with a mild detergent, or dry clean; dry them in shade and iron on the reverse. Dry clean georgette and embellished pieces.
