What makes a saree Banarasi

A Banarasi saree is defined by where and how it is woven, not by the fabric alone. The weave comes from Varanasi (Banaras), where weavers work motifs — floral bootis, jaal patterns, meenakari colourwork — into the fabric on a handloom using zari thread. The motif is part of the cloth, not printed or stitched onto it afterwards. That is the single clearest difference between a woven Banarasi and a printed imitation.

Weaving one saree takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on how dense the zari work is, which is why a genuinely handwoven piece costs what it does.

Caring for a Banarasi saree

Dry clean only — water and detergent damage both the silk and the zari. Store it folded in a cotton or muslin cloth rather than plastic, which traps moisture, and refold along different lines every few months so the creases do not weaken the fabric. Keep it away from direct sunlight, which fades the dye. Do not hang a heavy Katan saree for long periods; the weight pulls the weave out of shape.

Because every piece is woven by hand, small variations in colour, weave and motif are inherent to the craft and are not defects.
